The Cool Kids suite of programs has been used internationally for around 30 years and is one of the most extensively evaluated interventions for child and adolescent anxiety. While it has helped many thousands of young people, research shows that up to 25% of participants retain a clinical diagnosis several months after treatment.
This expert knowledge session will include a pre-recorded video, which we will share with delegates shortly before the live session, introducing the program and its core methods. Delegates will receive 3.5 hours of training (1-hour pre-recorded introduction + 2.5 hours live session). The live session will review research on factors linked to poorer response, examine treatment techniques and barriers to delivering them, and consider strategies to address these challenges. It will conclude with a discussion on treatment non-responders, with time for participants to raise questions and share their expertise.

About the talk
The Cool Kids Suite of programs to manage anxiety and related problems among children and adolescents has been used for around 30 years and is one of the most extensively evaluated paediatric anxiety interventions in the world. Its international adoption and multiple translations have helped many thousands of young people from a wide range of cultural backgrounds live less impaired lives. Yet our empirical evaluations show that up to 25% of participants still retain a clinical diagnosis several months after completing treatment. While we don’t have definitive answers yet, this expert knowledge session will consider how we might improve treatment delivery to maximise the benefits it can have. The expert knowledge session is designed for therapists who have had at least some experience in treating anxious young people.
We will begin with a background video that summarises the Cool Kids program and its core methods. The live session will begin by reviewing some of the research evidence about clients and methods that may be associated with poorer response. We will then address several treatment techniques in more detail and consider some of the complications and barriers that may arise in delivering them, along with possible strategies to overcome these barriers. Finally, we will discuss treatment non-responders and describe strategies that might assist in moving forward with these families. The aim is to allow plenty of opportunity for workshop participants to raise questions and to provide their own expertise as much as possible in an online format.
Learning outcomes
1. To recognise some of the common barriers to treating anxious young people
2. To consider some methods to address these barriers
3. To understand methods of personalising intervention
