This two-hour online training event will focus on social anxiety in adolescents, with a strong emphasis on developing practical clinical skills. The session will explore how social anxiety can be more effectively identified and recognised in young people, alongside key psychological processes that may be targeted in therapy. Attention will also be given to common challenges around engagement, particularly when working with adolescents who may be reluctant or ambivalent about support. The training will further consider important clinical considerations when working with neurodivergent adolescents, offering a thoughtful and inclusive perspective relevant to professionals across mental health and related settings.

This advanced session will be ideal for professionals in child and family mental health—such as psychotherapists, psychologists, arts therapists, family therapists, counsellors, psychiatrists, mental health nurses, and social workers—who have therapeutic experience with children and families.

About the session

If you work with young people, it is likely that some of them will be experiencing social anxiety disorder. It is the most common anxiety problem, affecting around 5% of the population, and it almost always first occurs during the teenage years. Social anxiety disorder can cause significant distress and impairment and tends to persist in the absence of treatment. This webinar is for practitioners working in a range of settings who would like to gain skills and confidence in recognising, assessing and supporting young people with social anxiety disorder.

This webinar will provide:

  • Guidance and tools for the sensitive and accurate detection of social anxiety
  • Information on careful assessment of the problem in the context of other mental health difficulties and neurodivergence
  • A brief introduction to the specific psychological processes that maintain social anxiety in young people, and techniques to target these.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand barriers to detecting social anxiety in young people and how to overcome these.
  • Gain skills in recognising and assessing social anxiety in the context of other mental health problems and neurodivergence.
  • Recognise the psychological processes that maintain social anxiety in young people and the potential for taking a targeted approach to treatment.
