About the event
Evidence synthesis specialist Anthea Sutton presents key insights from the systematic review and meta-analysis conducted by a team at the University of Sheffield, which evaluated the clinical and cost-effectiveness of Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) for treating and preventing PTSD in children and adolescents.
Complementing the empirical data, Dr. Russell Hurn draws on extensive CAMHS experience to explore the practical realities of delivering EMDR to young clients. The presentation will outline the current strength of the evidence base, address real-world implementation challenges, and show how systematic findings can actively inform developmentally tailored, effective care for children and young people.
Attendees will gain a clear, realistic understanding of the evidence base for EMDR with children and young people alongside practical insights to inform clinical decision-making.

About the Speakers
Anthea Sutton is a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Medicine and Population Health, The University of Sheffield. Anthea is a research methodologist and has over 20 years of experience in health research, specifically conducting systematic reviews and evidence synthesis projects on a wide range of topics related to mental health. Anthea led a project to conduct a systematic review of EMDR for PTSD in children and adolescents which was published in the journal of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy in 2025. Anthea also has a role as Research and Academic Liaison for the EMDR Association UK.
Dr. Russell Hurn is a Consultant Psychologist working within CAMHS, an author and broadcaster with 25 years of experience working in Child and Adolescent mental health in the NHS, Private and voluntary sector. His clinical work specialises in trauma and EMDR. Russell has worked for 8 years with Anna Freud centre in London as a Programme Director for CYP IAPT programmes and as a tutor on the Leadership programme.
