About the session

Talk title – Running in the Family: Can we help anxious parents to raise confident children?

Mental health runs in families, yet adult mental health services have traditionally focused almost exclusively on the individual patient. Children of parents with anxiety disorders are almost twice as likely to develop problems with anxiety themselves, and an emerging evidence base suggests that the way anxiety influences parenting may be one important mechanism underlying this increased risk. At the same time, parenting can have profound effects on parents’ own mental health, creating bi-directional relationships that are rarely addressed in routine care.

This session will explore the evidence linking parental mental health (particularly anxiety disorders), parenting behaviours, and children’s emotional development, drawing on experimental studies examining how anxiety affects parents’ attention, interpretation of ambiguous situations, emotion recognition, and behaviour management. It will consider the implications of these findings for adult mental health services and discuss why simply treating the parent’s symptoms may not be sufficient to improve outcomes for their children.

The bulk of the presentation will then introduce a brief, evidence-based parenting intervention developed specifically for parents experiencing significant anxiety. Attendees will learn practical strategies for helping anxious parents to raise confident children. Findings from randomised controlled trials of both face-to-face and digital versions of the programme will be presented, including evidence that relatively brief, scalable interventions can improve parenting and reduce children’s anxiety symptoms.
